How do you put all your employees at ease? And how do you give your office an extra boost on top of that? We bet you can guess the answer!
It is special to have a lot of confidence in another person. What's even more remarkable is that you can build this trust with the scent of lavender! Sellaro et al. (2015) proved this. They had subjects participate in a game. The thrust of the study? Subjects could earn money by first giving money to others. They were divided into three groups, one of which was exposed to lavender scent. The outcome? Those in the lavender group were much more generous! You can use this scent, for example, when the trust between two parties could use an extra push. Or when cooperation within your organization is very important.
.There's no need to explain how valuable a good working memory is in the office. But did you know you can enhance it by diffusing the scent of rosemary? Moss, Wesnes & Duckett (2003) conducted research on this. Subjects had to answer questions that tested their attention, information processing and memory, among other things. For this, group 1 was not exposed to any added odor. In groups 2 and 3, participants were exposed to lavender or rosemary. The results? The rosemary group scored the highest, meaning that rosemary has a positive effect on the overall quality of our memory! Very useful when there is a lot of information to remember and apply.
We all want to be at work in the office with full focus, don't we? The smell of peppermint can help with this. Researchers Barker et al. (2003) tested subjects while typing, memorizing and alphabetizing texts. Once with the presence of peppermint scent and once without. When participants smelled peppermint, they were more attentive, focused and productive! Great, for example, when doing work that requires a lot of accuracy.
Fewer mistakes because of lemon? Yes, really! Japanese research (Oboh, Olasehinde & Ademosun, 2014) found that this is because lemon scent increases your alertness. They tested this by diffusing lemon scent through an office building. During this experiment, as many as 54% fewer clerical errors were made. And so the quality of performance went up! But this is not the only thing lemon can do. Lemon also increases the perception of hygiene. For example, research by Holland, Hendriks & Aarts (2005) shows that you are more likely to clean a room when you smell the scent of lemon. A fresh-smelling, tidy office where fewer mistakes are made. We call that a win-win-win situation!
